Pharmaceutical Lotion:

Lotions are either liquid or semi-liquid preparations that contain one or more active ingredients in an appropriate vehicle.

A lotion is a viscous (low to medium viscous) medicated or nonmedicated topical preparation, meant for application to unbroken skin. Lotions are usually applied to external skin with bare hands, a clean cloth, cotton wool, or gauze without friction. Solid particles incorporated in lotions should be in a finely divided state to avoid grittiness.

Lotions are used for the topical application of medications such as antibiotics, antiseptics, antifungals, corticosteroids, antiacne agents, and soothing/protective agents.

Lotion may be types of o/w (mostly) or w/o emulsion. Some Lotions are solutions or suspensions of solids in an aqueous medium (the insoluble matter should be divided very finely)

.
Key Ingredients of lotion are the aqueous and oily phases, an emulsifying agent (to prevent separation of these two phases), and, the drug substance. Other excipients such as fragrances, glycerol, petroleum jelly, dyes, preservatives, and stabilizing agents are commonly added to lotions for improved organoleptic and preservation characteristics.

Lotions may be prepared by triturating the ingredients or High speed mixers or colloid mills for large scale production.
