A Drug Inspector (DI) or Drug Control Officer (DCO) is a highly respected regulatory official responsible for ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines, cosmetics, and medical devices in the market. They inspect manufacturing facilities, pharmacies, and wholesale distribution centers to enforce the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940.
Because of the specialized nature of the role, the eligibility criteria typically require a Degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm) or Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology from a recognized university. While some states require 18 months of practical manufacturing or testing experience, others hire fresh pharmacy graduates.
The general exam pattern usually consists of a rigorous written examination followed by a personal interview. Written tests are largely objective (MCQs) and divided into two core areas: Pharmacy knowledge (covering Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence) and General Knowledge (covering current affairs, mental ability, and regional GK).
