Detailed Subject-Wise Syllabus
The written test evaluates you on a 10+2 (CBSE) academic level. English as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA). Here is the topic-by-topic breakdown to guide your preparation.
1. English Syllabus
The English section tests basic grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
- Comprehension: Reading an unseen passage and answering questions based on it.
- Grammar: Tenses, Subject-Verb Concord, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Modals, and Clauses.
- Sentence Transformation: Active & Passive Voice, Direct & Indirect Speech (Narration).
- Vocabulary: Synonyms, Antonyms, One-word substitution, Spelling pitfalls, and Idioms/Phrases.
2. Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA)
This section tests your logical thinking and awareness of the world around you.
Reasoning (Verbal & Non-Verbal):
- Number and Alphabet Series
- Coding and Decoding
- Blood Relations & Family Tree
- Direction Sense Test
- Clock and Calendar questions
- Venn Diagrams
- Non-Verbal Reasoning (Figure series, embedded figures)
General Awareness:
- Current Affairs: National and international events (last 6 months).
- General Science: Basic principles of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- Geography & History: Basic Indian geography, historical landmarks, and culture.
- Civics: Basic knowledge of the Indian Constitution.
- Computer Knowledge: Basic operations and terminology.
Mastering the RAGA Section: Strategy & Books
The RAGA (Reasoning and General Awareness) section is often the make-or-break paper for the Medical Assistant trade. Carrying 30 of the 50 total marks, your performance here dictates your final merit ranking. The biggest challenge? You have 45 minutes to solve 50 questions combined, leaving you with less than a minute per question.
1. The 3-Pillar Preparation Strategy
Pillar A: Time & Attempt Management
- The Golden Split: Aim to finish the 20 English questions in 15–18 minutes, leaving you strictly 25–30 minutes for RAGA.
- The “Skip” Rule: If a reasoning puzzle doesn’t click in 30 seconds, skip it. Negative marking (-0.25) punishes blind guessing.
Pillar B: Reasoning as the Anchor
- Non-Verbal Focus: Practice visual reasoning daily (figure series, paper folding) as they rely entirely on pattern recognition speed.
- Verbal Hotspots: Master Coding-Decoding, Direction Sense, Blood Relations, and Number Series. These appear in every shift.
Pillar C: Targeted General Awareness
- Static GK: Focus on “firsts in India,” longest/tallest, capitals, and currencies.
- Current Affairs: Strictly cover the last 6 months. Focus on Defense exercises, sports, and major awards.
- Basic Science: Know human diseases, vitamins, SI units, and IT abbreviations.
2. Recommended Booklist
You do not need a massive library. A few focused books, revised multiple times, will yield the best results.
| Subject Focus | Book Title | Author / Publisher | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-in-One | Indian Air Force Group Y Guide | Arihant Experts | Best starting point. Aligns perfectly with the IAF exam level and pattern. |
| Reasoning | Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning | R.S. Aggarwal | The gold standard. Only practice the easier exercises; skip Bank-PO level questions. |
| Gen. Awareness | Lucent’s General Knowledge | Lucent Publications | Focus strictly on the “Miscellany” section at the back and basic sciences. |
| Current Affairs | Speedy Current Affairs (Yearly) | Speedy Publications | Highly condensed, point-wise defense and sports news tailored for objective exams. |
| Mock Tests | Air Force Group Y Practice Sets | SK Publishers | Excellent for building time management. Take one every alternate day in the final month. |
Start by taking one previous year’s mock test before you even begin studying. It will instantly expose your weak areas and show you exactly what depth of knowledge the IAF expects.
Phase II: Physical Fitness Test (PFT) & Instructions
The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) consists of two main parts:
1. Running (1.6 KM)
The time limits vary based on your educational qualification:
2. Calisthenics
After a short break following the run, complete these exercises sequentially:
Adaptability Tests
Following the PFT, candidates must undergo the Adaptability Test-II. This evaluates a candidate’s ability to adapt to the military environment of the Indian Air Force and adjust to various geographic terrains, weather conditions, and operational deployments.
p
